Crawl Space Insulation

With crawl space insulation, the idea is to condition the crawl space, much in the same way that you might condition other parts of your home. Rather than trying to cut off the crawl space from the conditioned upper floors, you should bring the crawl space nearer to the upper floor's temperature by leaving off the underfloor insulation, by insulating the walls and sealing the floor against outside moisture and temperatures.

Crawl Space Insulation

Up to 60% of the air on the first floor in a home originates from the crawl space or basement

A truly energy efficient home has the perfect insulation system from its foundation up to the peak of the roof without a break in the insulation envelope. Unfortunately, crawlspaces are sometimes forgotten.

The most common complaint we hear about crawl spaces are the cold floors the homeowners experience during the winter. However, there are many more problems that will arise from an improperly insulated crawl space.

The traditional insulation system in a crawl space consists of fiberglass batting stuffed in between the floor joists. The correct way to install a fiberglass batt is to place the paper face of the batting towards the conditioned side of the space. For a fiberglass batt to work properly it needs to be installed in a clean and dry space. Unfortunately, those are not the characteristics of a crawl space. Nearly all of the crawl spaces that are insulated with fiberglass batting have exposed subfloors. This happens because the batts become wet and heavy and fall out of the cavity. Once the floors are exposed, there is nothing to prevent the cold dirty air of the crawl space from penetrating into the home.

Crawlspace Dehumidifier Installation

Crawl spaces are dark and dusty, and air quality isn’t always at its finest. If the humidity level climbs (which it often does) in a crawl space, the excess moisture can cause mold, mildew, rot, and other issues.

Instead of letting this space grow mold and bacteria, a crawl space dehumidifier is your solution. The machine is installed in your crawl space, pulling the humid air, removing the moisture, and sending the fresh, dry air back out. If your crawl space is humid, and you want to prevent very expensive damages and a dehumidifier is for you.

Yes, Your Crawlspace Needs a Dehumidifier

An encapsulated crawlspace might not be enough for all crawlspaces. While your crawl space might be one of those places in your home that is out of sight, it shouldn’t be entirely out of mind. Most people are surprised to hear when we tell them that about 60 percent of the air they breathe in their homes comes from their crawl spaces. Maintaining a healthy crawl space means keeping a healthy home for you and your family.

One of the most asked questions about crawl spaces has to do with dehumidifiers. A dehumidifier maintains and regulates the humidity levels in your crawl space, just as it would in other places in your home. We are here to help you, whether or not you need a dehumidifier installed in your crawl space today, it’s important to gather all the information you can while in the decision-making process.
